January 14th was the premiere of the Sex and the City prequel series, “The Carrie Diaries”. Warning for all Sex in the City fans- this is a complete 180 from the series. While the former was a comedy about living in the big city and the trials and tribulations of having a relationship (I’m looking at you Mr. Big…), this new member of the Carrie Bradshaw franchise is more of a coming of age story. Since it is on The CW, the comedy is there, but not as prevalent. The teen aspect is the main point of this series (Thanks to high school dances, relationships and virginity discussions).
AnnaSophia Robb (From “Soul Surfer” and “Bridge to Terabithia”) plays Carrie Bradshaw as a high school student in the 1980s. Her mom passed away three months prior to the series, so her and her sister, Dorrit, are now being raised by their single father. You are immediately introduced to 1) The tension between her and her sister and 2) Her love of fashion. After sex is described as “putting a hot dog in a keyhole” (teenagers…am I right…), Carrie is told she has received an internship at a law firm in Manhattan. She heads to the Big Apple, rips her stockings, and because of the dress code at her job, must go pick up a new pair on her break. Here we can see the real Carrie coming out. She enters a Century 21 department store and you can see the wonder in her eyes…she is ecstatic.
Larissa, an editor at Interview Magazine, sees Carrie and becomes interested with her bag (which would be perfect for a photo shoot that mixes “Scarface” and “A Midsummer’s Night Dream”…wait, what?!) so they start talking about Interview Magazine and Carrie’s fashion love. After some partying, some missing people (Dorrit, truthfully, has no redeeming qualities) and a few great make-out sessions, we finally get to see Carrie start her writing “career”. When cleaning out her mother’s closet, she stumbles upon some of her journals (written in and empty ones) and she decides to keep a journal…excuse me…”diary”…herself. And so begins the crazy journey that is sure to be Carrie Bradshaw’s younger years, since we know what went on in her thirties, and some of it isn’t very pretty.
I thoroughly enjoyed the show and I will be sticking around for more. AnnaSophia Robb shines in everything she does, and this is no exception. The 1980’s time period makes for awesome fashion and music for the show (They even made an online mixtape of 80’s-tastic tunes!). It makes me yearn to be best friends with Carrie…I know that’s a little weird.
Overall, I give the show 4 Jimmy Choo High Heels out of 5!
It is on every Monday at 8pm on The CW. Leave me a comment letting me know if you watched and your thoughts. Until next time…pass the remote!
